99 Steps

99 – 5 = the 94 Steps!

The 99 Steps in Charlotte Amalie were built in the 18th century by the Danes using ballast bricks from ships. The steps were constructed to connect the upper town on Government Hill to the seaport below, and to traverse the steep hills of downtown. The steps are a local landmark and a glimpse into the island’s colonial history and offers a panorama at the top of Blackbeard’s Hill.
